When Lincoln was elected, it is the beginning of the strengthening of Union. With slavery, the United States was quite turbulent, with the South always questioning the authority of the federal government. Once Lincoln was elected and faced with the task of preserving the union he prevailed. This is especially significant to the many African-Americans in slavery. One of my staff writers, Franklin, a negro, says that "That was the day that the chains of oppression broke."
